Baralaba
Baralaba mine is located in the southern Bowen Basin,
around 188 kilometres south-west of the Port of Gladstone.
Peabody commenced mining in July 2005 and the mine is targeting
an annual production rate of 0.5 million tonnes (0.55 million
tons) of coal.
The open-cut mine is operated under contract by Downer
Edi Mining using a truck and shovel fleet. Coal is mined
from six seams. It is crushed and screened to produce a
bypass PCI product suitable for Japanese steel mills, and
thermal coal. The coal is railed to the Port of Gladstone
and exported from the RG Tanna Coal Terminal to customers
predominantly in Asia.
Baralaba has open-cut reserves of 2.4 million tonnes (2.6 million
tons) in the current mine plan, with further exploration being
undertaken to prove up additional open-cut reserves. The lease
contains extensive underground reserves with steeply dipping seams;
there are no plans to mine the underground reserves in the near
future.
