Metropolitan
Metropolitan is located in the Southern coalfields, about 50
kilometres south of Sydney. The coal leases cover an area of 5195
hectares. The mine currently produces around 1.5 million saleable
tonnes (1.65 million tons) of hard coking and semi-hard coking
coal per year. Reserves provide for a mine life of more than 20
years at current and proposed levels of production.
Metropolitan is located about 40 kilometres north of the Port
Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT) and uses this facility to export most
of its product. Around 90 percent of coal produced
at the mine is exported under contract to customers in Japan,
India, South America and Europe. The remaining product is trucked
to domestic customers. Metropolitan's customers include major
steel producers and industrial consumers in Japan, India, Brazil
and Germany.
Significant upgrades have been made to the underground mining
equipment and surface infrastructure. This includes the extension
of the longwall face width from 135 to 158 metres, and upgrade
of the drift conveyor system to 600 tonnes (660 tons) per hour.
